Looking back at our lives and heartfelt legacy with Mom.
Looking back at our lives with Mom, it’s good to have hindsight now. She’d once commented she didn’t think she’d be leaving much for us. In terms of money, not a whole lot. However, in terms of a beautiful legacy, she left much more!
That’s because she passed on her love of reading to us; especially the Bible, children’s Bible stories, adventure books, and the classics.
One of my fondest memories is of my three sisters and me sharing a room with two beds, with Mom sitting on one of them at bedtime. We took turns reading verses from the Old and New Testaments. It took about two years to finish the whole Bible. How we loved sharing that time together!
After that, we read a series of children’s books that brought those Bible stories to life. The magnificent pictures in these treasures made the stories feel real. We loved every bit of it.
As we grew older, we brought in library books and books assigned from classes. Sometimes, they’d come up missing. And sure enough, we’d find Mom reading them!
One of her favorite classics was Little Women. She read that several times throughout the years and started calling us her little women. I liked that because it was one of my favorite books, too.
This year, Mom’s legacy comes full circle. Two of her great-grandsons have already graduated from high school. Two more great-grandsons will be graduating this year.
And her youngest great-grandson has just started kindergarten in Tennessee. He has already moved on to reading beginner books!
How wonderful it is to see Mom’s legacy continue to grow through the generations!
